About
Hatteras Fever II
Captain Buddy Hooper
I have been a lifelong resident of Hatteras Island and started fishing in the Gulf Stream when I was 8 years old (with Capt. Ronnie Stowe on the Ronnie and Capt. Bill Foster on Albatross II).
I started mating part time in 1967 with Capt. Ronnie Stowe and Capt. Jules Langston and in 1970, upon graduating from NC State University in 1970 began mating full time with Capt. Emory Dillon on the Early Bird.
In 1973, after getting my Captain’s license while working with Capt. Emory, I started running the Sea Whisper for Capt. Arnold Tolson until 1976. Realizing I was getting nowhere operating a boat for someone else, I went to Ricky Scarborough and helped him build my own boats. We started with a 23 ft crab boat and ending up (7 boats and 15 years later) with the 54 ft Hatteras Fever II.
I have been running charters out of Hatteras Harbor since 1979 and am still going strong today. Charter fishing, commercial fishing, and boatbuilding have been my only source of employment since I started mating in 1970.
